Regional economic development strategy ready for action
Medicine Hat – Medicine Hat Economic Development and its regional partners are ready to put the Southeast Alberta Economic Opportunity Strategy (SAEOS), Implementation Framework, and Action Plan into action.
The regional economic development strategy was created through a partnership between Medicine Hat Economic Development, Cypress County, the County of 40 Mile, the Towns of Redcliff and Bow Island and the Village of Foremost.
The plan is the culmination of a 2023 directive for Medicine Hat Economic Development to complete a regional economic development strategy. The strategy utilized funding from the Government of Alberta’s Northern and Regional Economic Development grant program. The plan was presented to City Council on January 20, 2025.
"Over the past 15 months, the City of Medicine Hat has had the pleasure of working alongside our neighbouring municipalities to identify what we do well together,” said Selena McLean-Moore, Director, Medicine Hat Economic Development. “The release of this strategy supports our six municipalities in leveraging our strengths to build Southeast Alberta into one of Alberta’s leading economic jurisdictions.”
This strategy’s action plan aligns with five key economic priorities for the region:
- Talent attraction
- Alignment and advocacy
- Aerospace and defence
- Agriculture and agri-food
- Regional tourism
This strategy supports a connected economic development ecosystem, minimizing duplication and maximizing service delivery efficiencies to ensure regional competitiveness.
Regional collaboration was key to its development. Several engagement opportunities took place including in-person workshops hosted in each partner municipality. These brought together elected officials, administrators, local business owners and operators, and regional service providers.
