Reservations open for 2022 camping season

Medicine Hat – Online reservations for the city’s two municipal campgrounds, Gas City Campground and Echo Dale Campground, for the 2022 camping season will begin on Monday, January 17, at 7 a.m.

The camping season at Gas City Campground will open Friday, April 29 and will close Monday, October 10. The Echo Dale Campground will be open from Friday, June 3 to Monday, September 5.

“Both campgrounds have seen a lot of work over the last year and we can’t wait for campers to see the improvements we’ve been able to make at both sites,” said Scott Richter, Manager of Business and Innovation, as well as interim Recreation Manager for the Parks & Recreation department. “We opened up six campsites in Echo Dale Regional Park last year and saw how successful it was and we’re excited to build onto that this camping season by now offering 10 sites for tents and small trailers.

Also new for the 2022 season are two comfort cabins, located at Gas City Campground, which will be available to book beginning in June.

“We’re thrilled to be able to offer this style of camping to families and friends,” said Richter. “Each cabin sleeps up to six people, has a small living area including a sink and fridge, as well as a two-piece washroom.”

The City of Medicine Hat thanks the Government of Alberta for supporting this project through the Municipal Stimulus Program, developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, to stimulate the economy through job growth and red tape reduction. Funding was allocated per capita, providing Medicine Hat a maximum contribution of $7.5 million. The program identified extensive eligibility criteria, including no ongoing operational costs (creating future burden on tax rates), no existing budget commitment (projects that would not go forward in the absence of support through the stimulus program), commencement of construction by 2021 and expending all grant funds by December 31, 2021, except in projects where an extension was successfully granted by government officials.

Funding from the program also contributed to the conversion of all remaining unserviced sites at Gas City Campground to 30 amp full service sites.
