Rising river levels, but no major effects expected from heavy rain
Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat is prepared but anticipates no significant effects from rising river levels due to incoming heavy rainfall across southern Alberta.
The City has been informed through the Provincial River Forecasting Centre (RFC), that heavy rain events are occurring across Southern Alberta over approximately the next three days. The City’s primary focus is the potential for river flooding based on the rainfall occurring on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.
Based on data provided, the South Saskatchewan River will rise in Medicine Hat next week. However, at this point, the RFC anticipates it will be contained within the banks.
The City of Medicine Hat is prepared to mobilize if conditions change.
“We have comprehensive emergency management plans, expertly trained personnel, and specialized equipment ready to respond to these types of events,” said Merrick Brown, Associate Director of Emergency Management with the City of Medicine Hat. “We have entered an enhanced monitoring mode for this event, and we are a well-prepared organization.”
The City of Medicine Hat continues to receive daily updates on the potential flood risk based on the modelling and expertise provided by the RFC. Prompt public notice will be provided if changes arise.
