Mid-West Design & Construction (Mid-West), DAAS Developers, and the City of Medicine Hat broke ground at Southlands Common, a new commercial development and professional office plaza, in November 2021.

The 2.6-acre project began 18 months prior and construction companies will officially start the build for the first business moving in, a 6,000 square foot dental office owned by Matthew Gibb and partners.

“This site will offer a large parking space, easy access, and is in close proximity to family-friendly neighbourhoods,” says Gibb, who’s been in the dental industry for 12+ years. “We’ve outgrown our current office and are now able to design a custom layout that will be most efficient for dental office use and future growth.”

Guy Bellis, operations manager for Mid-West, says his team is excited to partner once again with DAAS Developers to begin construction. Mid-West celebrated their 41st year in operations in 2020 and continue to service the Medicine Hat and area with new commercial builds, refacing and interior and exterior renovations.

“The Southlands location has high visibility and there is a lot of density in the area with apartment and condo buildings, standalone houses, and new developments,” says Bellis. “It’s great to see the site being developed after 10 years and creating amenities for the large number of residents in the area.”

Dave Reinheller, owner DAAS Developers, says the community can expect to see the start of more commercial buildings being constructed by Spring 2022. “It’ll be approximately 28,000 square feet of development in Southlands when completed,” confirmed Reinheller.

Both construction companies acknowledged the City of Medicine Hat and local realtors at the ceremony and thanked them for their support and assistance throughout planning the project.

“It’s a pleasure to be here with this group of people who are making a difference in our community,” said Mayor Linnsie Clark. “The new businesses who move into this development provide opportunity for those in the area to easily walk to these amenities. A lot of hard work with everyone involved went into making this happen, and I’m excited to see this project progress.”

The Southlands Commons development will be located 271 Southlands Boulevard SE.
