Statement: Mayor, Council on physician attraction, retention

The Mayor and City council are aware of concerns in the community about timely access to primary care physicians in our region. Council is in communication, and supportive of the work being done by the physician attraction and retention staff within Alberta Health Services.

We are working collaboratively with AHS to position Medicine Hat into a desired destination for physicians and their families, not just a place to work. Multiple barriers have been identified and work is being done to remedy them, however, this situation is not unique to Medicine Hat, as there is currently a shortage of healthcare workers across Canada. This national shortage makes the work we do to attract and retain physicians suitable to the community all the more important.

We understand the dire need in the community for General Practitioners and share the concerns of the community regarding the physician shortage.
