In April 2019, Brendon Hamilton purchased four acres of prime commercial land on the TransCanada Highway, with plans to develop a mix-used commercial building to lease to businesses looking for highway exposure.
Little did Hamilton know that a global pandemic would be declared 12 months later, impacting everything from construction schedules to grand opening plans.
In spite of the challenges, Hamilton recently cut the ribbon on one of Medicine Hat’s newest structures, a state-of-the-art three-story build offering a world-class training centre and bright, open space for lease.
“It’s the perfect location for business, with nearly 40,000 vehicles passing by on the highway daily,” says Hamilton. “We’re also located beside the Saamis Tepee and Tourism Medicine Hat’s Visitor Centre.”
Currently, Badlands View is home to Badlands Training Centre and C & J Heatlh. The Whiskey District, a new restaurant by Grit City Distillery, will be opening soon.
Badlands Training Centre is a two-level, multi-purpose fitness facility featuring a 40-foot rock climbing wall, boxing ring, and a full range of fitness classes for children, adults and seniors.
In keeping with on-again, off-again pandemic restrictions, Badlands Training Centre hosted a soft opening Oct. 6, 2020 and a full grand opening on July 9, 2021.
Now that the doors are fully open, Medicine Hat’s newest gym plans to have 40 to 50 classes a day to accommodate a growing number of members, who are looking forward to seeing additional plans for the four-acre parcel come to life.
“We didn’t build on the entire four-acres of land, so future projects are in the works,” says Hamilton. “We want to build a basketball and volleyball court outside and include coaches in the city to help grow those sports.”
Badlands View is connected to the trail system, which encourages people who live in nearby neighbourhoods like Southridge, Crestwood and Connaught to ride their bike, rollerblade or walk to the gym. Located across from Medicine Hat College, Hamilton looks forward to connecting with students as well.
In the midst of a global pandemic, Hamilton is heartened to report that only a 3,000 square foot space is left for lease, offering the perfect space for a dentist office, day home or learning centre, or a coffee shop, to name but a few.
“We envision a lively space that gives people a place to work, eat and play, and be that epi-centre for Medicine Hat’s 65,000 residents to enjoy,” says Hamilton.
