TREX Southeast moving locations in Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat The Alberta Foundation for the Arts’ Travelling Exhibition program in southeast Alberta (TREX Southeast) will have a familiar new home base within Medicine Hat this spring.

TREX Southeast will move back to the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre starting in May 2025. The City-administered program has been based out of TREX Space (2-516 Third Street SE) since 2019. Close to 40 exhibitions have been presented in TREX Space, featuring work by hundreds of Albertan artists and numerous local artists. Previously, the program had been hosted out of the Esplanade since 2005, and before that, the Medicine Hat Museum and Art Gallery.

The move back to the Esplanade provides TREX exhibitions greater visibility within the premier facility for arts, heritage and entertainment in southeast Alberta. The Gallery Foyer at the Esplanade will host TREX exhibitions after the move, starting this April. The facility change also increases staff capacity for more programming and outreach at host venues in the city and throughout southeast Alberta.

“TREX Space has been a wonderful arts hub in our community for the past five years – we appreciate the opportunity to have utilized this unique space to feature the work of artists in our region,” said Sierra Zukowski, Program Manager and Curator with TREX Southeast. “In the same breath, we are very excited about the new opportunities this shift back to the Esplanade will provide.”

There are two more exhibitions that will be hosted at TREX Space prior to the move:

  • Feb. 8 to Apr. 5 – Soft Stories
  • Apr. 12 to Apr. 25 – Living Room – Medicine Hat College Art & Design Grad Show

This change in location won’t affect the core services of the TREX program, which organizes and distributes visual art exhibitions to public spaces like schools, libraries and community centers across southeast Alberta. In Medicine Hat, residents can continue to view TREX exhibitions at numerous venues throughout the year, including:

  • Yuill Family Gallery at Medalta
  • The Nature Centre at Police Point Park
  • Medicine Hat Public Library
  • Big Eagle Room – Omahksipiitaa at Medicine Hat College
