Winter registration for recreation programs includes new swimming program

Medicine Hat – Registration for winter recreation, fitness and leisure programming at city facilities, including Big Marble Go Centre and Crestwood Recreation Centre, opens Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7 a.m.

The City of Medicine Hat is pleased to announce the introduction of the Starfish Swimming Canada swim lesson program to replace the discontinued Canadian Red Cross Swim Lesson Program which will end on Dec. 31, 2022.

The City of Medicine Hat will continue to deliver the Canadian Red Cross First Aid and CPR training.

Lisa Kennedy, Recreation Manager, explains, "Our aquatic coordinators conducted substantial research and comparisons to find a quality swim program that meets the needs of our community. We're very excited to take this next step with Starfish Swimming Canada and look forward to the benefits that it brings.”

Starfish Swimming Canada provides a progressive format through three streams: Parented lessons, Swim School™ and Stroke School™. A convenient conversion chart will help registrants identify how their Red Cross levels transition to Starfish Swimming Canada.

The City continues to offer leadership courses and lifeguard training through the Lifesaving Society.

“We ask that parents and guardians use existing report cards or their online account alongside our conversion charts to determine which level is best for their child,” adds Kennedy. “Our team is always happy to answer any questions that may arise.”

The City of Medicine Hat offers a Fair Entry program as a way to help low income individuals and families access city programs. Applicants may qualify to save up to 50 per cent for regular-priced programs and admission. Learn more and apply online by visiting the city website.
