Dangerous Goods

Vehicles hauling dangerous goods are required to follow the assigned Dangerous Goods Route or Restricted Dangerous Goods Route, unless the Fire Chief permits an alternate route.

What are dangerous goods?

Dangerous goods are listed in Schedule “B” of Bylaw #2759: Transportation of Dangerous Goods:

  • Liquified Petroleum Gas
  • Oxygen
  • Fuel Oil
  • Propane
  • Nitrogen
  • Gasoline
  • Petroleum Crude Oil

Restricted Dangerous Goods Route

A Restricted Dangerous Goods Route is a route permitted for safe travel of dangerous goods under the following conditions:

  • The transport must occur between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
  • The total number of axles on the vehicle including its trailer does not exceed six.
  • The vehicle is transporting only dangerous goods listed in Schedule “B”.
  • The vehicle is transporting to a location that lawfully sells the dangerous goods.

Deviating from a Dangerous Goods Route

You may deviate from a Dangerous Good Route if the location you are hauling to lawfully sells dangerous goods listed in Schedule “B,” provided that:

  • The vehicle is not transporting any dangerous goods other than those listed in Schedule “B”.
  • The stop is made for the sole purpose of unloading the dangerous goods and the vehicle is moved from the location promptly after the unloading has occurred.
  • No portion of the vehicle overhangs any highway or other public place.
  • The vehicle is a Small Payload Vehicle not exceeding 24,300 kilograms and less than 11 meters in length.
  • You travel the shortest possible distance from the Dangerous Goods Route.
