The City of Medicine Hat Electric Utility launched the Going Green program in April 2004. Going Green Logo

In a contract with the Utility, Vision Quest/TransAlta (Canada’s largest generator of wind energy) will annually produce and deliver 15,000 megawatt hours of EcoLogo certified* wind power to Alberta's energy grid.  Medicine Hat has access to this environmentally friendly energy through its imports of electric energy from the grid.

Going Green's support of wind energy production by Vision Quest will reduce greenhouse gas emissions** by 13,000 tonnes each year. This is equivalent to the emissions of 2,725 cars annually.

Why Going Green?

  • Wind is a clean, renewable energy source
  • It fits with the City's Natures Best Program, which encourages:
    • The production of renewable energy sources
    • The wise use of natural resources
    • Safeguarding the environment
    • The City of Medicine Hat Electric Utility receives "Green EnergyTM certificates"*** towards realizing the City's environmental sustainability objectives

*EcoLogo Certified – Vision Quest is an EcoLogo certified distributor of Alternative Source Electricity through Environment Canada’s Evironmental Choice program. All the power generated and sold by Vision Quest is from generation facilities that are EcoLogo certified.

**Greenhouse gas emissions – Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere are often called greenhouse gases (GHG). Some greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide) occur naturally and are emitted into the atmosphere through natural processes and human activities. During the past century humans have substantially increased emissions by burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, oil and gasoline to power our cars, factories, utilities, etc. These added gases are enhancing the natural greenhouse effect, and likely contributing to an increase in global average temperature and related climate changes.

***Green EnergyTM Certificates – The certificates, also known as Green Tags are a way for consumers to support the use and development of renewable energy.  They represent a specified amount of green electricity added to the grid on behalf of the customer. When clean energy is sent to the power grid, conventional energy is displaced, along with the associated harmful emissions. The benefit of this emissions reduction is then “bundled” and sold as Green Tags.
