In a sanitary sewer collection system, a Lift Station (pump station) is used to move wastewater through the sanitary sewer mains from lower to higher elevations, where natural gravity flow decreases, with the end destination being the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
A typical lift station consists of a wet-well where the wastewater is first received; various pumps and motors; pipes; valves; power supply system; alarm controls and systems for monitoring pump operations and wastewater levels; as well as an odor control and ventilation system.
There are 16 City owned Lift Stations in operation in Medicine Hat.
