Recycling refers to the process of collecting used materials usually considered to be “waste” and reprocessing them. In this process these used materials are sorted and processed for use as raw materials for the production of new products. Recycling varies from reuse in the sense that while reuse just means using old products repeatedly, recycling means using the core elements of an old product as raw material to manufacture new goods.
Residential Recycling Program
The program applies to all single family homes and smaller multi-family residences (fourplexes or less) which currently have a grey household waste cart. Recyclable materials from the blue carts will be collected by Environmental 360 Solutions, then emptied and sorted at the Materials Recovery Facility, and marketed appropriately. As determined by City Council, Residential Recycling is a mandatory program; there is no provision for opting out. Effective July 1, 2018 the utility bill net cost to residents that are part of the Residential Recycling Program for all solid waste charges came in at an additional $2.89 per month.
Implementation of the Residential Recycling Program is part of the City’s 10-Year Waste Management Strategy. A 2015 Customer Service Survey focused on Solid Waste Management showed strong support for residential collection of recyclables.
Bulk Recycling Depots
The four bulk recycling depots located throughout Medicine Hat remain in operation with the implementation of the Residential Recycling Program. Residents and business that are not part of the Residential Recycling Program or those who have excess recyclables can take their recyclable materials including cardboard, plastic, mixed paper, newspaper, tin and glass to one of the depots for recycling. Other items such as HHW, e-waste, paint and oil can be recycled by taking them to the Waste Management Facility for proper diversion. Refer to the Drop-off Depots page for location information for each Recycling Drop-off Depot.
