Commonly referred to as “the Landfill”, the Waste Management Facility operates as much more than just a landfill. Located approximately three kilometers off Highway 41A just passed the city limits, the City of Medicine Hat owns and operates the Waste Management Facility, a Non-Hazardous Class II facility.
The facility consists of a municipal landfill, compost production operations, recycling and diversion of various items and also accepts certain types of industrial waste.
Please note: The disposal of household hazardous wastes is only available to residents. Commercial vendors must dispose of their hazardous waste through a certified service provider.
The Waste Management Facility usage rate continues to increase due to a growing population and economy. To maximize the life of our current landfill and operating facility, and to be really effective we have to incorporate the 4 Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover - into our daily routine.
The Waste Management Facility disposal fees are posted in Waste Bylaw #1805 as well as the Recycle Coach App. Important notes to remember are:
- Regular disposal rates apply to ALL mixed loads that include chargeable items
- No GST is charged on Waste Management Facility disposal fees
- Acceptable forms of payment include cash or debit cards
- Composition of waste loads is highly variable. The operating staff has final say about the acceptability of any material and the charges applied to each load.

Compost for Sale!
SureGrow Compost produced by the City of Medicine Hat is available for sale at the Waste Management Facility. SureGrow is suitable for landscaping projects and gardening and is a popular soil amendment product. Bagged quantities are available for purchase at the Scale House in 20 litre sized bags. Bulk quantities can also be purchased but must be self-loaded into a pickup truck or trailer. Additional loader fees apply for all tandem loads.
