The fixed rate option offers utility customers the ability to remove month-to-month price variability from the electric and gas portions of their utility statement by locking in the price. Each month, the energy charge portion of the utility statement would be based on the amount consumed multiplied by the fixed rate.  Customer can choose to sign up for one or both.  Customers can opt out after six months. A new rate will be set for 2018.

Gas: $5.80 per gigajoule
Electric: $0.0680 per kilowatt hour

How does it work?
The fixed rate option removes month-to-month price volatility from customers’ electric and/or gas utility statement by locking in their energy price until the end of the year. The energy charge portion of the utility statement would be based on the amount of consumption used at the fixed price.

Who is eligible?
Residential, small commercial and medium commercial customers in the Medicine Hat electric and gas utility service area are eligible for the fixed rate option. The easiest way to tell if you qualify is if the electric and/or gas portion of your utility statement is from the City of Medicine Hat. If it is, you qualify.

Are there any fees or charges?
No, there are no fees or charges associated with opting in or opting out of the energy fixed rate.

What if I decide not to participate anymore?
Customers can opt out at any time by using any of the same methods listed above that are used for signing-up, once they have completed their 6 month obligation.

How do I sign up?
There are a number of ways. Customers can contact City Hall’s Customer Service department to participate using a number of different methods.
Are there limits to how many times I can sign up?
No, there are no limitations to how many times customers can opt in or opt out of the energy fixed rate. Whether opting in or out, however, it’s important to note that the new rate will become effective on the first day of the next new Billing Period that starts 30 days or more from the day that sign-up occurs. Customers have an obligation to remain on the program for a minimum of 6 months.

Will the price change?
The price is set on an annual basis and is adjusted each January.
