Tax Instalment Payment Plan (TIPP)
TIPP is the Tax Instalment Payment Plan by which taxpayers pay their property taxes in monthly instalments by pre-authorized transfer of funds from their bank account, rather than one single tax payment.

Sign up before December 31 to pay your taxes in 12 monthly instalments

Sign up before September 30 to pay the total of the missed instalments of the current year       now , plus a one time late filing fee of two percent of the initial payment. Then the remaining balance will be paid by monthly instalments.

What is TIPP?
TIPP is the Tax Instalment Payment Plan by which taxpayers pay their property taxes in monthly instalments by pre-authorized transfer of funds from their bank account, rather than one single tax payment. 

Why should you use TIPP?

  • TIPP breaks the annual tax payment into monthly payments to make budgeting easier
  • Regular payments are assured. If you are on vacation, out of town on business, or sick, your payment will be made on time
  • Convenient and reliable method of ensuring that your tax bill is paid
  • TIPP is not subject to discount or penalties provided monthly payments are made.

Who can use TIPP?
All taxpayers are eligible providing all previous years taxes are paid in full.

How does TIPP work?

  • Payments start January 1 in each year and are made on the first day of every month thereafter
  • Monthly payments for January to June shall be equal to 1/12 of the annual tax levy from the preceding year
  • Monthly payments for July to December shall be equal to 1/6 of the outstanding balance for the current year as of June 30
  • Once you are on TIPP you will be automatically renewed on the plan each year

Who can apply for TIPP?
You can apply for TIPP up to September 30 for the current year’s taxes. If your application is received after January 1 of the current year, you will be required to make an initial payment equal to the total of the missed instalments of the current year, plus a one time late filing fee of two percent of the initial payment.

How do you apply for TIPP?
To apply for TIPP, complete and sign the TIPP PreAuthorized Debit Application form, attach a void cheque, and return to the Customer Service Counter at City Hall.

Withdrawal or cancellation from TIPP
You may withdraw from TIPP by giving written notice not less than two weeks before the next payment date.

If any monthly payments are missed the City of Medicine Hat has the option to cancel the TIPP agreement.

If you withdraw, or the City cancels your TIPP agreement, all unpaid taxes become due and payable, and are subject to penalties in accordance with the Tax Penalties Bylaw.

Any payments that are dishonoured by the bank are subject to a service charge in accordance with the Dishonoured Cheque Bylaw.

Tax Arrears Installment Payment Plan (TAPP)
TAPP is an optional monthly Tax Arrears Instalment Payment Plan which allows taxpayers to make consecutive monthly payments for current taxes and taxes in arrears over a term not exceeding 24 months. Payments are made by pre-authorized transfer of funds from their bank account on the first of each month, rather than one single tax payment.

Why should you use TAPP?

If you are on vacation, out of town on business, or sick, your payment will be made on time. Convenient and reliable method of ensuring that your tax bill is paid. Individual plan to be determined to avoid progressive collection action such as a Tax Sale of the property. Convenience of not being sent collection notices.

Who can use TAPP?
All taxpayers whose taxes are in arrears are eligible.  Arrears are prior year taxes outstanding on January 1 of current year. 

How does TAPP work?
Regular monthly payments are made on the first day of every month for the term of the Tax Arrears Payment Plan. Monthly payments consist of:

  • Estimated current year taxes
  • All taxes in arrears
  • All estimated penalties during term of plan divided by number of months in plan
