The City of Medicine Hat provides Electric, Gas, Water, Sewer, and Solid Waste (Garbage, Yard Waste and Recycling) utility services to the residents of Medicine Hat. Billing for these services is handled by Customer Service and Collections.
With the City’s announcement of a 90 day deferral, this means that should you be unable to make a payment against your utilities due to a layoff, or lack of work, you will NOT be charged a penalty, receive a disconnect warning fee or be disconnected for not paying your bill.
You will still receive a monthly utility statement, and should you have the resources to pay it as usual, then please do.
Effective June 19, 2020 the Utility Bill Deferral Plan ends.
After the 90 day deferral period, utility bills will be due. They are not cancelled. Normal collections processes will resume.

Part 8 of the Electric Utilities Act provides Medicine Hat with an exemption from retail competition. This exemption is due to the City’s ability to produce enough electricity to satisfy its own electric requirements. Electricity generation, distribution and retail are all performed by the City of Medicine Hat – this makes us unique in the province of Alberta.
