During the public health situation regarding COVID-19, Planning & Development Services remains open. However, to comply with physical distancing, in-person visits are restricted. Please see information below.


To apply for permits or business licenses:

  • Submit electronically to pbe@medicinehat.ca, or
  • Drop applications in the drop box at City Hall (west entrance, near Courthouse)

Please do not contact Safety Codes Officers directly. Phone the numbers above to ensure continuity for coordinating inspections.

To submit electronically:

  • Download application form, print it and complete it.  See Checklists and forms library.
  • Scan the completed form, or take a clear digital photo of it.
  • Email the completed form to pbe@medicinehat.ca
  • Attach all necessary drawings, maps, etc. in PDF format.
  • Total email size cannot exceed 36 MB.

To drop off application:

  • Download application form, print it and complete it.  See Checklists and forms library.
  • Enclose completed form, drawings, other required documents, and USB drive (if desired) into an envelope.
  • Address the envelope to Planning & Development Services.
  • Drop in the drop box at the west entrance of City Hall, near Courthouse (24 hours).

Application payments:

After your application is received and processed, you will be notified by phone or email of the cost of your application. Payment may then be made by cheque mailed to the address below, or dropped into the drop box at City Hall. Do not send cash. If you are a corporate customer, your account will be invoiced as usual.

Inspections and Compliance Monitoring

Safety Codes Officers will continue to provide next day inspections when an inspection request is received by 1:00 pm during normal business hours.

In the interest of personal safety, as well as compliance with orders of Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health and City guidelines, a Safety Codes Officer (SCO) has the right to not enter a building to complete an inspection if they deem the site to be unsafe.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the SCO may request that the inspection be completed by video chat (Facetime, Google Duo), photographs, or by teleconferencing. If an occupied building is deemed unsafe, and photos or video access cannot be provided, your inspection will be delayed until an in-person inspection is determined to be safe. It is important to note that work which requires an inspection cannot be covered (i.e. drywall, etc) until it is approved by an SCO. Please allow the inspectors to work safely while performing their duties.

Meetings with staff at Planning & Development Services

  • In-person meetings will likely be scheduled as online meetings or teleconferences for the foreseeable future.
  • If a meeting is required, you will be notified by phone and/or email regarding meeting details.
