Citywide and Intermunicipal Plans

The MDP is the primary statutory planning document that outlines how land will be used and guides future growth within Medicine Hat over the next 30 years. It is based on a 50 year vision for the City's overall growth and development. It also provides broad policy direction the types of land uses within the City. The MDP provides direction on how development is expected to occur and how decisions on development are made. The MDP provides the policy basis for Area Structure Plans (ASP's), Area Redevelopment Plans (ARP's) and the Land Use Bylaw (LUB). The current MDP has been in effect since 2012.

A new MDP is currently in development. For more information, visit myMH.

The IDP provides the City of Medicine Hat, the Town of Redcliff and Cypress County with a comprehensive policy framework regarding land use and future development within the urban fringe. The plan includes communication protocols and procedures for resolving conflicts as well as administering the plan among the three municipalities. This plan has been in effect since 2010.

The SSRP establishes a long-term vision for the South Saskatchewan Region and aligns provincial policies at the regional level to balance Alberta's economic, environmental and social goals. The regional plan also includes strategies for responsible energy development, sustainable farming and ranching, forest management, and nature-based tourism. This plan's latest revision was in 2017.

Community and Neighbourhood Plans

Planning at the neighbourhood level is split into two types of statutory plans: an Area Redevelopment Plan (ARP) and an Area Structure Plan (ASP). Both types of plans provide guidance on land use, infrastructure, transportation and the environment. Neighbourhood plans must also be consistent with higher level plans such as the MDP.

An Area Redevelopment Plan provides a framework for the redevelopment of an existing neighbourhood within the City.

An Area Structure Plan provides a framework for the development of a new (greenfield) area of the City.
