The City of Medicine Hat is committed to the safety of our customers, the environment and our employees
In an annual preventative maintenance program, Electric Distribution performs tree trimming to prevent tree limbs and branches from contacting distribution power lines and, where deemed necessary, will cut trees down on public or private property.
Request for Tree Trimming
As per Bylaw #2244, when Electric Distribution is contacted with a request for tree trimming, a company representative will visit the site and determine if an electrical safety hazard exists. Electric Distribution will determine what extent of tree trimming work is required.
When tree trimming is performed by the Utility
We make every effort to ensure that there is sufficient clearance so that the tree remains safe until maintenance is carried out during the next cycle. Our tree trimmers are trained in proper pruning techniques to redirect growth away from the power lines as well as maintaining the health of the tree. In some instances, a tree may be too close to power lines creating a potential high risk and may need to be cut down completely.
AS A CAUTION TO OUR CUSTOMERS
Trees that have grown to a point where they are close to energized power lines must be trimmed by Electric Distribution.
Hire A Professional
The Electric Utility does not clear vegetation near the secondary power lines (or customer service lines) supplying electricity to customers unless there is a serious electrical hazard. It is recommended that homeowners hire professional tree trimmers when managing their own trees. On request, the Utility may remove the wire to allow tree removal to take place and reinstall the line once the task is complete.
