How To Participate / Application Form
The EnerGuide® Ratings for New Homes Incentive Program (the Program) offers a rebate to encourage the construction of more energy efficient homes. The rebate amount is awarded based on the level of energy savings achieved beyond ‘a typical new home’ – that is one built to the current energy code. This Program requires the services of an energy advisor.

To participate in the Program, follow the steps below:

  1. Determine your eligibility
Before completing any work under the Program, please ensure that you read through the eligibility requirements and the Program Terms & Conditions. For instance, EnerGuide® ratings must be determined under the ERS v.15 rating system to qualify.

  2. Submit PART ONE of your application to HAT Smart
To reserve funding under the Program, submit a fully completed copy of your PART ONE application. This must be signed by the applicant to be considered for funding.

If the applicant is unable to sign in person, an email from the applicant may be submitted with the application. This email must contain all relevant information, including the contractor name, incentive type and project address.

An incomplete application will be returned for resubmission and will not be entered in to the queue. If you have not yet received your City of Medicine Hat Utility Account Number for the project address, please note it in the email.

The Utility Account number is comprised of two parts:
    • Location ID (first 6 digits, specific to the project address); and
    • Customer ID (last 7 digits, specific to the applicant).

If you are unable to locate the account number, please contact Customer Service.

Note: On-site Renewable Energy Contributions do not qualify under the Program if the Applicant installs a solar photovoltaic system on the qualifying home and receives a rebate under the 2020 Solar Electric Incentive Program.

HAT Smart will provide confirmation of funding status by email.

Don't know how to submit your application? Visit the How To Apply page for more information.
  3. Find an Energy Advisor
To be eligible for a rebate under this Program, your EnerGuide® rating must be determined by an energy advisor under the ERS v.15 rating system. An energy advisor is an individual that has been trained and tested by Natural Resources Canada to perform all of the required modeling, testing, and associated paperwork required to obtain an EnerGuide® rating.

  4. Find the complete list of service organizations that work with energy advisors in our community.
  5. Construct your home and get your EnerGuide® Rating
Final invoice from the Energy Advisor must be paid in full and dated between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020.

  6. Submit PART TWO of your application and all required documentation to HAT Smart
Complete and submit a fully completed copy of your PART TWO application form to HAT Smart. This must be signed by the applicant to be considered for funding.

If the applicant is unable to sign in person, an email from the applicant may be submitted with the application. This email must contain all relevant information, including the contractor name, incentive type and project address.

An incomplete application will be returned for resubmission and will not be processed.

Please ensure that you've attached all required documentation. Original documentation will not be returned to the Applicant by HAT Smart.

  7. Don't know how to submit your application? Visit the How To Apply page for more information

  8. Pending approval, your rebate will be paid in one of four ways:
    • Cheque: mailed to the address provided on your application form within 6 to 8 weeks

    • Credit: applied to your City of Medicine Hat Utility Account in the next billing period

    • Direct Deposit: deposited directly in to your bank account. Complete the form below and return it to HAT Smart to submit to the City of Medicine Hat's Accounts Payable department with your application.

    • Direct to the Contractor: The applicant may assign the payment of the rebate directly to the contractor upon project completion with the applicants signed approval.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: Deadline for applications is noon on January 8, 2021 (noon on the last business day before January 10 of the following year), provided Program funding is still available.

Rebates are processed on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED basis. Late or incomplete applications will be declined.

If the Expected Rebate is higher than the Anticipated Rebate because the number of gigajoules below the “typical new home” baseline is greater than anticipated, HAT Smart will enter the difference (to a combined rebate maximum of $10,000) in the queue based on the date of notification and may be paid out should funding be available. If funding is exhausted prior to notification of change, you will be notified in January 2021 of the payment status.

Note: All applications shall be subject to approval by HAT Smart. A completed Application Form is NOT a guarantee of eligibility for a rebate under the program, nor payment of the rebate itself. Rebates are based on fully completed Application Forms and issued on a first come, first served basis. An incomplete Application Form can result in a delay of payment or no payment if program funds have been exhausted.
