How To Participate/Application Form
The EnerGuide® Ratings for New Homes Incentive Program (the Program) offers a rebate to encourage the construction of more energy efficient homes. The rebate amount is awarded based on the level of energy savings achieved beyond ‘a typical new home’ – that is one built to the current energy code. This Program requires the services of an energy advisor.

To participate in the Program, follow the steps below:

  1. Determine your eligibility
    Before completing any work under the Program, please ensure that you read through the Terms & Conditions for eligibility requirements. For instance, EnerGuide® ratings must be determined under the ERS v.15 rating system to qualify.

  2. Find an Energy Advisor
    To be eligible for a rebate under this Program, your EnerGuide® rating must be determined by an energy advisor under the ERS v.15 rating system. An energy advisor is an individual that has been trained and tested by Natural Resources Canada to perform all of the required modeling, testing, and associated paperwork required to obtain an EnerGuide® rating.

  3. Find the complete list of service organizations that work with energy advisors in our community.
  4. Reserve Funds
    To reserve funding under the Program, please complete the following online application:
    Upon submission, the application will be entered into the funding queue and the applicant will receive email confirmation of fund status. This email will include a link to the Part Two application to be submitted on project completion.

    Note: On-site Renewable Energy Contributions do not qualify under the Program if the Applicant installs a solar photovoltaic system on the qualifying home and receives a rebate under the 2020 Solar Electric Incentive Program.

  5. Construct your home and get your EnerGuide® Rating
    To qualify for the current year Program, the final invoice from the Energy Advisor must be paid in full and dated between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020.

  6. Request your rebate
    A link to the Part Two application was included in the email confirmation sent upon receipt of the Part One application. Upon submission, the application will be processed for payment.

    If the Actual EnerGuide® Rating is greater than the Targeted EnerGuide® Rating, and funding is fully reserved upon receipt, HAT Smart will enter the difference (to a combined rebate maximum of $10,000) in the queue based on the date of notification. You will be notified in January 2021 of the payment status.

  7. Pending approval, your rebate will be paid in one of four ways:
    • Cheque: mailed to the address provided on your application form
    • Credit: applied to your City of Medicine Hat Utility Account in the next billing period
    • Direct Deposit: deposited directly in to your bank account.
    • Direct to the Contractor: The applicant may assign the payment of the rebate directly to the contractor upon project completion.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: Deadline for applications is noon on January 8, 2021 (noon on the last business day before January 10 of the following year), provided Program funding is still available.

Rebates are processed on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED basis. Late or incomplete applications will be declined.

Note: All applications shall be subject to approval by HAT Smart. A completed Application Form is NOT a guarantee of eligibility for a rebate under the program, nor payment of the rebate itself. Rebates are based on fully completed Application Forms and issued on a first come, first served basis. An incomplete Application Form can result in a delay of payment or no payment if program funds have been exhausted.
