Did you know that Canada is hosting World Environment Day on
June 5, 2017? Environment Week 2017 is being kicked-off on World Environment Day. This year, we are celebrating our love of and connection to nature by encouraging citizens to get outside.
Starting on June 5th, get outside and show that you’re #WithNature. Breathe in the beauty and remember that by keeping our planet healthy, we keep ourselves healthy too.
What are you waiting for? Let’s get HAT Smarter this year! Find your nature. Get adventurous. Learn to love the natural world.
Here’s what you can do to celebrate:
Submit your photos!
The City of Medicine Hat wants to learn more about what you love about getting outdoors in our community.
Submit your pictures and stories showing us how you are #WithNature or how you plan to celebrate #WorldEnvironmentDay to email@example.com by noon on June 2, 2017 for a chance to win a goodie bag! The winner will be announced on June 5, 2017.
Pick up a new map!
In honour of World Environment Day, the City of Medicine Hat is pleased to announce the release of its new Heritage Trail Network Map!
Maps are available at various locations around the city, including the Parks and Recreation Department office, Tourism Medicine Hat, the Esplanade, and more! Contact Parks and Recreation at 403.529.8333 for more information.
For online trail maps visit the Trailforks website. Download the app and find the region “Medicine Hat” and you will be instantly connected to all of our local trails. Use this app to track your experience and report trail issues.
There are plenty of activities going on in the community to celebrate Environment Week, from Marshmallows in Kin Coulee to Dragonflies and Friends. See the attached poster for local events.
Green your life!
Leave the car at home - walk or cycle to work. Not only will you get to enjoy the outdoors, but you will reduce your carbon footprint.
Explore a local park - did you know that Medicine Hat has over 100 parks? Enjoy the outdoors in our city by taking a morning stroll through Police Point Park, having a picnic at Strathcona Island Park, or playing a game of beach volleyball at Kin Coulee in the evening.
Green your office - did you know that producing 1 kg of paper requires 2-3 times its weight in trees? Try going paper-free for the day and think about the waste you are generating and the impact our actions have on the natural environment.
Get into your garden - did you know that on average we spend about 90% of our time indoors? Finding your nature can be as simple as spending time in your own yard. Try xeriscaping, incorporating native plants into your yard or growing a vegetable garden to help reduce your footprint.
Plan a trip - did you know that Banff National Park was Canada's first national park, established in 1885? To celebrate this year's theme, Canada is offering free entry to all of our national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites! Get out and explore nature in our country.
Picture all the places that matter - add to the world’s biggest nature photo album. Share a photo or video of your favorite place in nature using #WorldEnvironmentDay or #WithNature and explaining why it's special to you.
There is plenty that you can do to celebrate year-round!
