Also known simply as the City’s Power Plant, this department is responsible for safely and efficiently operating the city’s generation assets to ensure a reliable supply of power. Electric Generation is mandated with improving plant sustainability and with providing an annual dividend to the City of Medicine Hat.
The City of Medicine Hat began generating electricity in 1910 using diesel fuel. Today, the Power Plant uses natural gas and steam to produce electricity for its customers.
History of Electric Generation
The Power Plant generates, transmits and distributes electricity to approximately 30,000 customers within the City of Medicine Hat, Redcliff, Dunmore, Veinerville and outlying rural areas adjacent to the city.
In 2017, Electric Generation expanded the Power Plant’s capacity to 246 MW of generation by adding 'Unit 16' to its fleet of generators, ensuring enough supply availability for the City’s peak load should the largest generating unit go offline.
