The City of Medicine Hat provides a number of parking options for visitors, shoppers, and workers in the downtown area. On-street parking is free with a maximum time limit of two hours in one location. The off-street parking lots include parking for permit holders and free parking with limitations for the general public.

Business owners and workers in the downtown are encouraged to purchase pass holder permits to secure available parking spaces in designated areas. For the safety and consideration of everyone, parking is monitored and violators will be ticketed.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does the City limit street parking in the Downtown? Why?

Yes, the City wants to ensure that parking is available for everyone visiting and working in the Downtown. The 2-hour parking limit helps maintain the flow of traffic and ensure parking is available for short-term users, given the high demand for parking in the area.

On-street parking is intended for visitors and short-term stays in the Downtown.

The 2-hour time limit applies to the hours between 8 am and 6 pm, Monday to Saturday.

2. Does the City monitor and enforce parking in the Downtown?

Yes, the Public Roads bylaw allows for the City to enforce time-limited spots throughout the City, including in the Downtown. This is to ensure time limits are respected and regularly rotated among Downtown users.

Vehicles found parked longer than the posted time limit may be ticketed.

3. I work Downtown. What are my options for parking?

There are different options available for everyone visiting and working Downtown.

City Hall is approximately a four minute walk from the Transit Parkade. The Medicine Hat Court House is also located on 1st Street SE, one block west of City Hall. Continue along 1st Street SE and you will find the Medicine Hat Public Library and the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre.
