The City of Medicine Hat wants businesses to be aware of the following information that may help at this time.

Property Tax Deferral

Property taxes will be mailed out on July 24, 2020 with a deferred due date of September 30, 2020. Council has approved this deferral to allow taxpayers additional time to pay their taxes without being penalized.

CMH Business Innovation Grant

The City of Medicine Hat (CMH) is pleased to commence the application process for Phase 1 of the CMH Business Innovation Grant, part of the COVID-19 Assistance package approved at City Council on May 4, 2020. The assistance package is intended to support residents and businesses in coping with and recovering from the economic impacts of COVID-19.

10/20/30 Residential Lot Incentive Program

On May 28, 2020 Invest Medicine Hat announced the 10/20/30 Residential Lot Incentive Program to encourage residential construction of single detached houses and duplexes in the greenfield subdivisions of Medicine Hat. 

  • $10K rebate once construction has been completed to weeping tile stage
  • Limited to the first 30 lots registered by licensed builders
  • Valid between June 1 and December 31, 2020
  • Who can benefit? Builders, developers & home buyers

Utility Bill Deferral

Effective March 16, 2020 the following measures are in place:

  • Automatic utility bill deferral for the next 90 days for all residential, farm and small commercial customers without penalty
  • No utility disconnection will occur for the next 90 days
  • No late penalties for customers utilizing the deferral

Nothing is required at this time in order to enact the utility bill deferral for the next 90 days.

Other customers requiring the utility bill deferral or alternate payment arrangements are encouraged to contact the Collections Group at collections@medicinehat.ca or phone 403.529.8113.

Planning & Development Services During COVID-19

Safety Codes Inspections Adaptations:

Inspections such as building, electrical, plumbing and gas projects are continuing. In some cases, Safety Codes Officers may do the inspection by using video chat, teleconferencing or by reviewing submitted photographs.

Due to physical distancing requirements, in-person applications are not possible. However, applicants can apply by email, by using the drop box at City Hall, or by mail. We are still available to provide assistance by phone or email.

Automatic extension of Building Permits:

For building permits which are about to expire, Planning & Development Services is sending out automatic permit extensions to allow customers more time to complete their projects during this challenging period.

Automatic Extension of Taxi Driver Licenses:

For existing approved taxi drivers with no changes to their driver abstracts: Taxi Driver Licenses which are due to expire during the COVID-19 pandemic are being extended.

RVs and Self-Isolation:

The rules regarding usage of recreational vehicle near homes has been temporarily relaxed. This is to allow people who wish to use their RVs for self-isolation while being near their family home.
