The City of Medicine Hat’s Environmental Utilities and Municipal Works Departments undertook two major construction projects on South Railway Street in 2017. These important projects replaced aging infrastructure, meeting Council’s strategic priority to ensure high-quality, well-maintained and affordable municipal infrastructure, with attention to our deep utilities and transportation network. The Downtown Project was completed on October 17, 2017.
August 31 UPDATE
Work is nearly completed on the South Flats portion of South Railway Street. Work will continue on final touches during the coming month including pavement marking, additional paving behind curbs, installation of delineators and a final assessment of work completed.
The final completion of this major infrastructure project provides the following benefits to residents and businesses in this area:
• Pavement rehabilitation
• Upgraded sanitary sewer and water support infrastructure
• Improved pedestrian and cycling connectivity
• Improved traffic safety
• Upgraded streetlights
• Upgraded CPR crossing
• Improved stormwater and drainage infrastructure

August 14 UPDATE - Paving work on August 19-20, 2018
*Once the paving is completed, the road will open to two-way traffic from Kingsway Avenue to Scholten Hill
South Railway St SE open to two-way traffic up to 6th St SE, with local traffic only west of 6th St SE. Eastbound and westbound South Railway traffic will be detoured onto 6th St SE, to and from Kingsway Avenue SE.
Project Update June 15, 2018
South Railway Construction Update
The work is progressing from northwest of 7 Street SE to 8th Avenue intersection on South Railway Street. The contractor is scheduled to pave the bottom lift asphalt in Stage 4 from northwest of 7 Street SE to 8th Avenue/6th Street intersection by the end of next week.
The last phase of construction from 8th Avenue/6th Street intersection to Kingsway Avenue intersection will commence the following week and is scheduled to be complete by end of August, 2018.
Motorists and pedestrians are reminded to obey all traffic signs/signals and drive safely around work crews. We thank everyone for their support and patience as we undertake this important project and would like to remind the public that access to all local businesses continues to be maintained.

Starting Wednesday, April 25, 2018 utility installation and road reconstruction will restrict vehicle traffic to one-way (westbound) in Stage 4 of the South Railway Street rehabilitation project from Allowance Avenue overpass to the 8th Avenue SE intersection.
Eastbound traffic will be detoured via 8th Avenue SE and 9th Street SE back onto South Railway Street
Local businesses access will be maintained throughout the project.

Paving of the bottom lift asphalt will occur on May 17, 2018, in Stage 4 of the South Railway Street rehabilitation project from Allowance Avenue overpass to northwest of 7 Street SE intersection. The next phase of construction will be from northwest of 7 Street SE to the 8th Avenue intersection on South Railway Street.
Starting Tuesday, May 22, 2018, the traffic on South Railway Street from Allowance Avenue overpass to Kingsway Avenue will be reduced to westbound one-way traffic only. Eastbound traffic will be detoured via Kingsway Avenue SE and 9th Street SE back onto South Railway Street.
