Four trees along Dunmore Road SE being removed to construct swale and improve drainage

Project Description

  • Four large trees are being removed along Dunmore Road SE between 28 Street SE and Southview Drive
  • This tree removal is part of a project to create an engineered swale that will improve stormwater drainage along this section of the boulevard.
  • Once the swale is constructed, new trees will be planted in their place

Timing and Traffic Accommodations

  • Trees will be removed on Tuesday, April 16, weather pending
  • Construction of the new swale will begin in May, 2019
  • Motorists are asked to obey all signs in the area as the existing four trees are removed, and to drive carefully past work crews during tree removal and swale construction

Benefits

  •  Currently, poor drainage in this location is causing water build-up that affects the road and backs up into neighbouring residential lots.

Notification

  • All affected residents in the area have been notified of the project and are aware of its benefits to their home and properties.
  • Updates will be provided here, by public advisory, and on the City's social media channels

Information about the Tree Removal and Re-planting

  • Once the swale is constructed, new trees will be planted.
  • An arborist will be onsite to assist with the tree removal
  • The City’s Parks and Recreation Department has been consulted on the tree removal and replacement
  • The newly planted, replacement trees will be Dropmore Linden

 Information about the Swale Construction

  • A swale, or graded depression, is designed to direct runoff and slowly release it into storm drains.
  • By reducing runoff speed, more water will be absorbed, alleviating the current drainage issue.
  • The first step to create the swale is to remove the trees where it must be located.
  • The swale will be constructed out of concrete matting with holes to allow grass to grow over top
