Ev Niemen was a true pioneer of boxing in Medicine Hat, dedicating an extraordinary 51 years to the sport as a competitor, coach, and organizer after first lacing up the gloves in 1927. His passion for boxing was rooted in community and service—teaching the fundamentals of the sport wherever he could, including in his own basement, at Longfellow Rural School, in local community facilities, and while serving in the Armed Forces during World War II. Ev’s lifelong commitment to developing athletes and growing the sport culminated in his role helping to form the Medicine Hat Boxing Club in 1976. Through his tireless efforts and hands‑on mentorship, he left an enduring legacy that helped shape boxing in the region for generations.
