Leonard McGee was a true pioneer of winter sport in the Cypress Hills, remembered for his vision, perseverance, and hands-on leadership. Beginning in the mid‑1950s, he was the driving force behind the creation of Elkwater’s Mile‑Hi Ski facility, helping transform the area into a destination for alpine recreation. Leonard managed the daily operations of the ski hill for 15 years—continuing his work well past the age of 70—demonstrating remarkable dedication and commitment. He organized and inspired teams of volunteers, trained generations of skiers, and helped develop ski instructors and ski patrol groups, laying a strong foundation for safety, skill development, and community involvement. His efforts played a vital role in establishing skiing in the region and left a lasting legacy of leadership and passion for the sport.
