Robert “Grizz” Grisonich has spent more than four decades shaping athletics, education, and community spirit in Medicine Hat and southeastern Alberta. A respected coach, educator, administrator, and volunteer, his influence has reached generations of athletes both on and off the court.
Rob began his teaching career at Seven Persons School, where he taught for 21 years while coaching basketball, volleyball, badminton, and track and field. Like many educators in small schools, he filled countless roles, including athletic director, helping build strong athletic programs and meaningful opportunities for students. His career later took him to St. Mary’s School, St. Patrick’s School, and eventually Notre Dame Academy, where he served as principal.
Throughout his career, Rob became known not only for his leadership in schools, but also for his commitment to sport development across the province. He served as Southeast Volleyball Director with the Alberta Volleyball Association and was actively involved with the Health and Physical Education Council of Alberta, including chairing provincial conferences hosted in Medicine Hat.
A passionate coach, Rob spent decades mentoring athletes in school, club, and collegiate sport. Following his retirement from education, he continued coaching with the women’s volleyball program at Medicine Hat College for eight seasons. In 2018, he helped guide the team to a national championship appearance in New Brunswick.
Rob’s impact extends well beyond wins and championships. Since 1981, he has been deeply involved with Special Olympics Alberta, serving in numerous leadership and volunteer roles, including registration director and chair of several provincial events hosted in Medicine Hat. His dedication to volunteerism and community sport has helped create memorable experiences for countless athletes, families, and volunteers.
Known affectionately as “Grizz,” Rob is admired for the relationships he built throughout his career. Former athletes frequently return to thank him for his guidance, mentorship, and steady support. Many former players have gone on to become coaches themselves, continuing the positive influence he helped foster within the sporting community.
Sport has always been central to the Grisonich family. Alongside his brothers Pat and Boris — all three educators, principals, coaches, and officials — Rob helped create a lasting family legacy in Medicine Hat athletics.
The Medicine Hat Sports Wall of Fame proudly recognizes Rob Grisonich for his outstanding contributions to sport, education, leadership, and community service.
