2026

Wade Peterson has spent a lifetime representing Medicine Hat — and Canada — in one of the most demanding sports in the world. From local boxing clubs to the Olympic Games, Wade Peterson has built an extraordinary career through dedication, discipline, and a deep love of the sport of boxing.

Wade first stepped into the ring as a boxer himself in the early 1980s, competing throughout Alberta before transitioning into coaching, officiating, and international judging. While many people know boxing for what happens inside the ropes, Wade found his calling ensuring the sport was conducted fairly, professionally, and at the highest possible standard.

Over the years, he became one of Canada’s most respected boxing officials, earning international certification and representing the country at events around the world.

His journey has taken him everywhere from Romania, Serbia, Peru, Senegal, Brazil, and England to the Olympic qualification tournaments in Paris and the biggest stage of all — the Olympic Games.

At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Wade officiated multiple medal-round bouts, including the final heavyweight match of the Games — an honour reserved for the most trusted and respected officials in international boxing. Across the tournament, he officiated or judged seven of the thirteen championship finals, helping ensure Canada was exceptionally represented on the world stage.

Today, Wade continues to contribute to the sport as an international evaluator with World Boxing, mentoring and assessing the next generation of referees and judges while helping improve standards worldwide.

But beyond the credentials, travel, and elite-level competition, those who know Wade best describe someone who simply loves the people and community surrounding the sport. Whether sharing stories with officials from around the globe, mentoring young athletes closer to home, or supporting the local boxing community that helped shape him, Wade has always approached the sport with passion, humour, and authenticity.

Boxing has also become a family legacy. Wade stepped away from the sport for several years to focus on raising his children, later returning when his son began boxing himself. Today, his son continues that tradition as a coach in Kelowna, carrying forward the same passion for the sport.

And through every adventure — from crowded Olympic arenas to long international travel days — Wade has had the support of his family beside him, especially his wife, who he proudly credits as the person who keeps all the technology, paperwork, and travel logistics running smoothly.

Wade is celebrated not only as an accomplished official and ambassador for Canadian boxing, but as someone whose lifelong commitment has brought pride to Medicine Hat on the international stage.
