For nearly four decades, Wes King-Hunter has played a defining role in the growth and development of volleyball in Medicine Hat and across Alberta.
A teacher and principal in Medicine Hat since 1988, Wes began coaching locally the same year he helped establish CVVC — later known as the SEAVC Rattlers — creating opportunities for athletes of all ages and skill levels to learn and compete in volleyball. His commitment to grassroots development has helped shape generations of players, coaches, and volunteers throughout southeastern Alberta.
Wes coached volleyball at Medicine Hat High School for nearly 20 years and later spent seven seasons coaching at Medicine Hat College. In addition to his school and club involvement, he has remained dedicated to athlete development by working with younger players and athletes new to the sport, ensuring opportunities exist for everyone to participate and grow.
A fully certified Level 3 coach, Wes has also contributed extensively at the provincial and national levels. Through his work with Volleyball Alberta, he was involved in provincial team programs, coaching development, and athlete identification initiatives across Alberta. He served as an assistant coach with Team Alberta during the Canada Games cycle and earned opportunities with Volleyball Canada as both a guest coach with the senior women’s national team and later as head coach of Canada’s Youth National Team.
While his résumé includes accomplishments at the highest levels of Canadian volleyball, Wes is most proud of the culture and values he helped build through sport. Under his leadership, teams from Medicine Hat High School earned multiple provincial sportsmanship awards, reflecting his belief that character, respect, and teamwork are just as important as success on the scoreboard.
Wes has shared his lifelong passion for volleyball with his wife, also a volleyball coach, and together they have spent years supporting young athletes both on and off the court.
Through his leadership, mentorship, and dedication to community sport, Wes King-Hunter has left a lasting legacy in Medicine Hat volleyball and beyond.
