William and Molly Gray were true community builders whose generosity and commitment helped lay the foundation for hockey and recreation in Medicine Hat. In 1930, with the help of neighbors and friends, they built the Crystal Park outdoor rink on a vacant lot, creating a welcoming space at a time when community facilities were scarce. Throughout the 1930s, the Gray family—including their eight children—tirelessly cared for and maintained the rink, ensuring it remained open and accessible. Crystal Park became the starting point for thousands of citizens, hosting midget, juvenile, junior, and intermediate hockey programs, as well as providing a place for pleasure skating and community gathering. The Grays’ dedication left an enduring legacy, as their rink helped spark a lifelong love of skating and hockey for generations of Medicine Hat residents.
