William Lauder is remembered as the “Father of Boxing” in the Medicine Hat area, a title earned through both athletic excellence and extraordinary generosity. As Canada’s Lightweight Division Champion from 1906 to 1912, he established himself as one of the nation’s premier boxers during the sport’s early years. Following his competitive career, William devoted more than 20 years to officiating and training athletes, helping shape boxing as a disciplined and respected sport in the community. Known for his selflessness, he coached boxing students at no cost, often providing equipment and access to training facilities to ensure that financial barriers never stood in the way of opportunity. His commitment to mentorship and development left a lasting legacy, inspiring generations of boxers and firmly rooting the sport in Medicine Hat.
