Where adventure begins: discover Medicine Hat’s trails

With more than 190 kilometres of trails winding throughout the community, Medicine Hat’s trail network offers countless ways to explore, play and recharge. Whether you’re walking the dog, heading out for a sunrise jog, biking with friends, or enjoying a quiet evening stroll, there’s a trail for every adventure.

This summer, we invite residents and visitors alike to get outside, enjoy the trails and help keep them welcoming, safe, and well cared for.

Explore Something New

Medicine Hat’s Heritage Trail Network connects nine major parks, seven scenic viewpoints, neighbourhood green spaces, waterways, and coulees, offering plenty to see along the way. From well-loved routes to hidden gems, every outing offers a fresh perspective.

Exploring the trail network is easy with our Heritage Trail Map found online and at various locations throughout the city. And for those seeking a little more adventure, the Trailforks site provides information on the extensive multi-use and mountain biking trail network in and around Medicine Hat.

Play Responsibly

Trails are shared spaces, and a little courtesy goes a long way. By being mindful of others, we can help create a positive experience for walkers, cyclists, runners, families, and pet owners.

A few simple habits can help make every trail visit safer, smoother, and more enjoyable:

  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings by watching and listening for other trail users and wildlife.
  • Let others know when you are approaching or passing by using a bike or scooter bell or offering a friendly heads-up. Always pass with care.
  • When cycling or scootering, wear a helmet, stay in control, and keep your speed below 20 km/h or the posted limit. Ensure your ride has at least one working brake.
  • Yield to other trail users and stay to the right of the centre line where marked.
  • Keep pets under control or leashed and always clean up after them.
  • If heading out after dark, let someone know where you are going and equip yourself with a working headlamp, rear taillight, and reflectors so you are visible to others.

These thoughtful actions help create a better experience for everyone on the trail.

Thrive Together

Medicine Hat’s trails are among the community’s most treasured amenities. More than just pathways, they support healthy lifestyles, enhance well-being, and create opportunities to connect with nature.

When enjoying the trails this summer, a few thoughtful choices can help protect these spaces for future generations. Staying on designated pathways, respecting archaeological sites and environmentally sensitive areas, following ‘Leave No Trace’ principles, and foraging responsibly ensures our trails are enjoyable for years to come.

Whether you’re setting out for a short stroll or a full day outdoors, every trip on Medicine Hat’s trail network is a chance to enjoy our community and the spaces we share. Make it a great experience by showing courtesy, playing responsibly and creating a place for everyone to thrive.
