From Special Olympics to Tigers Hockey: Co-op Place Completes a Summer of Transformation

by Derek Schesnuk, Manager of Event Operations

Co-op Place has once again shown its versatility as Medicine Hat’s premier sports and entertainment venue, shifting seamlessly from a national event stage back into a hockey-ready home for the 2026-27 Medicine Hat Tigers season.

The summer’s largest undertaking was the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games. Co-op Place hosted both the  and Closing Ceremonies, welcoming athletes, coaches, volunteers, families, and supporters from across the country. The venue also supported the Athlete Dance and volunteer events, serving as a central hub throughout the Games.

The Opening Ceremony on August 11 launched the Games with the Parade of Athletes, live performances, Indigenous elders, and special guests including both the Governor General of Canada and the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. The program concluded with the official Opening of the Games by Mayor Clark, and the lighting of the Special Olympics cauldron. Delivering an event of this scale required close coordination, adaptability, and a strong focus on accessibility. In the lead-up to the Games, the venue and surrounding parking areas underwent improvements to better accommodate guests with mobility challenges as well as individuals with both visible and non-visible impairments.

The success of the Games highlighted one of Co-op Place’s key operational strengths: Its ability to quickly convert from a hockey arena into a large-scale, multi-purpose event space. The building’s flexible design and experienced operations team allowed it to meet the demands of a national multi-sport celebration without compromising guest experience.

Following the conclusion of the Games, that same flexibility shifted into reverse. Crews immediately began transitioning the facility back from event configuration to hockey operations, preparing the floor for ice installation and the return of the Medicine Hat Tigers.  Additionally, we’ve installed new hockey glass and protective netting and upgraded our in-bowl audio – creating a better overall fan experience.

This conversion marks the final stage of a busy summer and the start of a new WHL season. The Tigers will open their 2026-27 home schedule at Co-op Place on Saturday, September 19 against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

From hosting a national celebration of inclusion to rebuilding the rink for junior hockey, Co-op Place continues to demonstrate that its impact extends well beyond the ice surface. It is the planning, people, and operational expertise behind the scenes that allow the venue to evolve quickly – and keep Medicine Hat connected through sport, entertainment, and community events.
