Mook Fabrics: A Legacy of Culture and Community
In the mid-1940s, a small garage became the birthplace of what would grow into one of the region’s most respected fabric and textile businesses - Mook Fabrics. What began as a humble home-based operation has since evolved into a thriving enterprise, with its Medicine Hat headquarters now spanning over 30,000 square feet.
Today, the company is led by third-generation owner and president Jay Mook, who has overseen its expansion beyond its humble beginnings in the flats to new retail wholesale locations in Oakbluff, Manitoba and Pennsylvania.
But the story of Mook Fabrics isn’t just about growth. It’s about vision, values, and people.
“Strong company culture doesn’t happen by accident. At the end of the day, it’s about respect, collaboration, and realizing that everyone brings something to the table - that’s something we’re really proud of here at Mook’s,” said Davida Beaune, HR Director.
A People-First Culture
As a family-owned and operated business for three generations, Mook Fabrics has built its success on a people-first culture that prioritizes mentorship and advancement. Through training and development, the company empowers its team to grow into skilled professionals. Many employees have been with the company for more than a decade, a testament to the supportive environment and opportunities for growth.
“One of the things I appreciate most is that the company recognizes talent and truly gives people the chance to take on new challenges,” shared Carissa Beckles, Senior Purchasing Director.
Investing in Youth and Diversity
Mook Fabrics also stands out for its commitment to youth employment and workplace diversity. Young professionals bring fresh perspectives and energy, helping the business stay innovative and adaptable. Combined with the knowledge of experienced staff, this creates a dynamic environment where ideas flourish and creativity thrives.
“When people feel valued and heard, it motivates them to bring their best to work — and to stay with the company as they grow within the organization,” added Beaune.
For Mook Fabrics, diversity isn’t just a value; it’s a strength.
“Having a team made up of many different cultures and backgrounds brings new perspectives to Mook Fabrics. A diverse team helps us better understand and meet the needs of a wide range of people,” said Beaune.
A Broader Impact
Mook Fabrics’ journey is a powerful reminder that small, home-based businesses can grow into pillars of the local economy through a strong culture and investment in people. Their success shows how mentorship, diversity, and investment in people can shape not only the future but also the present.
