Lighting For a Cause

The City of Medicine Hat's Lighting for a Cause program is an initiative designed to bolster community spirit while shining a light on important social causes.

Aligning with City Council's Strategic Plan, this unique program has three core objectives:
  • Promote awareness of meaningful social causes
  • Foster community spirit

November 1 PURPLE

Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society

November is recognized as Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta. Every November, the Medicine Hat Women's Shelter Society hosts events and presentations to bring awareness to this important issue. To kickoff Family Violence Prevention Month, we are lighting the Saamis Tepee purple, the official colour of family violence awareness.

November 27 PURPLE

Take Action on Radon

November is Radon Action Month. Health Canada estimates that over 3000 people each year are dying of radon induced lung cancer and encourage all buildings to be tested for radon and all high levels reduced. Take Action on Radon is a national non-profit organization tasked with raising awareness on radon.

November 30 PERIWINKLE BLUE

My Gut Feeling

November 30th is Stomach Cancer Awareness Day. Each year, My Gut Feeling - Stomach Cancer Foundation of Canada runs an international awareness campaign "The Power of Periwinkle" to help promote awareness for this orphan cancer. In Canada, non-cardia gastric cancer (NCGC) is particularly prevalent among Indigenous populations in Northern Canada, with rates 2.7 to 3.1 times higher than the national average. My Gut Feeling advocates for increased awareness across our country as well as around the world. For more information: https://www.mygutfeeling.ca/stomach-cancer-awareness-day

December 1 RED

SafeLink Alberta

World AIDS Day is observed on December 1 to remember the lives lost to AIDS-related illnesses, support those living with HIV, and raise awareness about ongoing efforts to reduce stigma, discrimination, and health disparities. The Saamis Tepee will be red to commemorate the day, honour the lives lost and illustrate a powerful show of community solidarity, compassion, and remembrance.

December 5-7 GREEN and YELLOW

Medicine Hat Ringette Association

The Saamis Tepee will be yellow and green to shine a light on the important cause of advancing female participation in athletics, promoting inclusivity and empowering young women in sport.

With the annual Ed Horvath Ringette Tournament, the MH Ringette Association strives to provide opportunities for young female athletes to develop their skills, foster teamwork and build confidence through sport.

The Saamis Teepee is a symbol of Medicine Hat's rich cultural heritage, and by illuminating it in our ringette colors, we can celebrate both our city's history and the future of female athletes in our region. It will be an inspiring sight for our athletes, their families, and all visitors to our city, emphasizing the significance of sport as a vehicle for growth, empowerment and community pride.
