Candidate Resources
Candidate preparation contributes to a clearer, fairer and more consistent hiring process.
Providing information in advance helps reduce uncertainty and allows candidates to focus on demonstrating their experience, judgment and approach to work. It also helps ensure that every candidate receives the same expectations and instructions.
The tool below is intended to be sent to your candidates so they can properly prepare for the interviews and simulations prepared via Competency Match tools.
Estimated completion time: 10 minutes
Before you begin
All candidates should receive the same core information, instructions, and job description. Providing clear expectations does not give candidates the answers. It helps them understand the format and prepare relevant examples from their experience.
Send the preparation information early enough for candidates to review it and request clarification or accommodation.
Candidates themselves should have the job description and consider their past experiences, education, and responsibilities.
For the most effective experience, complete these tools in order or select the tool that best matches your current needs.
Candidate Prep Sheet
Share a straightforward guide that explains the competency-based hiring process and helps candidates prepare. Use this tool when 1) preparing to interview for a new role or job as a candidate, 2) when introducing a competency-based hiring process as an employer, and/or 3) whenever candidates would benefit from additional clarity about the process before a competency-based interview or job simulation.
What this tool does
- Explains what a competency-based hiring process involves.
- Helps candidates think about relevant examples from their experience.
- Supports more complete and relevant candidate responses.
What you will do
- Download the preparation sheet.
- Send it to candidates in advance.
- Explain the interview or assessment format.
- Ensure every candidate receives the same information and preparation time.
Information to have ready
You can begin without all of this information but having it available will make the process easier and help produce a more accurate result. This includes (but is not limited to) the following:
- The date, time and expected length of the interview or assessment.
- A general description of the interview or assessment format.
- Information candidates need to prepare or bring.
- Information about available accommodations.
- A contact person for questions or accommodation requests.
- The expected timeline for communicating next steps.
Avoid sharing confidential scoring guides, preferred answers or information that would give one candidate an advantage over another.
Remember, this tool is for candidates that have already been screened and are scheduling a structured, competency-based interview or job simulation.
Next step: Assessment
