Annual roadway resurfacing program starts May 30

Medicine Hat – On Monday, May 30, the City of Medicine Hat will begin the annual roadway resurfacing (overlay) program.

Construction will begin with repairing infrastructure adjacent to the roadways like catch basins, concrete curb and gutter, and sidewalks. Then the roads will be milled to remove the top levels of asphalt and repaved.

Each year, select roads are planned for resurfacing in the City’s capital budget based on the priority identified within a comprehensive asset management plan. This year, construction will occur at the following locations:

Parkview Drive NE from Altawana Drive NE to 12 Street NE
Infrastructure repair starts May 30 and last approximately five weeks. Milling and paving will follow and conclude by July 31.

Altawana Drive NE between Parkview Drive NE and the Maple Avenue Bridge.
In conjunction with the Parkview Drive section, a small section of roadway will be resurfaced on both the northbound and southbound lanes right off the north edge of the Maple Avenue Bridge.

Sage Road SE from Southridge Drive SE to Stratton Way SE
Infrastructure repair began May 25 and milling is expected to start on June 1. Paving will occur during the week of June 6.

Strachan Road SE from 13 Avenue SE to Strachan Bay SE
This project also involves sections of 13 Avenue SE and South Boundary Road north of Strachan Road. Work will occur in phases, with milling at the corner of Strachan Road SE and 13 Avenue SE expected to start on June 1. Infrastructure repairs and repaving will follow. Some work will occur only at night in order to minimize disruption to traffic and nearby businesses along the Strachan Road corridor.

In all cases, traffic will continue to flow in both directions though delays can be expected around the work sites. For the safety of staff and the general public, it is important that motorists obey all construction signage, flag personnel and temporary speed limits near the work zone.

The full roadway overlay program is expected to conclude by July 31. All schedules are weather dependent and subject to change.

Residents are reminded to view real-time road and sidewalk closures online on the City’s Construction and Closures Map.
