Athletic Ball Park Upgrades Begin

Medicine Hat – Construction at Athletic Park is now underway, following the announcement earlier this year of more than $3M towards upgrades for the ball diamond, part of the recently proposed Waterfront District.

Athletic Park ball diamond, home to the Western Canadian Baseball League’s Medicine Hat Mavericks, will see several extensive upgrades completed this year, which will create a safe and enjoyable experience for fans, staff and players alike. The multi-million dollar project includes the addition of a shade canopy, seating, fencing, as well as upgrades to the gate system and ticket office.

“These modernizations will enhance the spectator experience,” said Kelli Ireland, Marketing Specialist with Invest Medicine Hat. “These improvements show there’s a want and a need from the community to have this facility entertain for years to come.”

“We couldn’t be more thrilled, seeing this financial support from our government,” said Greg Morrison, General Manager and Owner for the Medicine Hat Mavericks. “Our focus is truly to create and fan-centric experience. We want to elevate the game experience for the community, the area and the sport.”

The City of Medicine Hat thanks the Government of Canada for supporting this project through the COVID-19 Resilience funding stream under the existing Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). The new stream allows municipalities to reallocate previously approved funding to projects that would stimulate local construction and support economic recovery from the pandemic. The federal funding is delivered through a bilateral agreement with the province of Alberta and applies to retrofits, repairs and upgrades for municipal buildings, COVID-19 response infrastructure, active transportation infrastructure (parks, trails, foot bridges, bike lanes, and multi-use paths), and disaster mitigation and adaptation. The criteria also specified that construction must start no later than September 30, 2021 and conclude by the end of 2021.
