Businesses Reminded to Maintain Access to Fire Exits

Medicine Hat – Medicine Hat Fire Services is reminding business owners to ensure they maintain access to all fire exits during the COVID 19 pandemic.

Many businesses are implementing strategies to comply with public health guidelines and to encourage physical distancing requirements within their premises. In some cases, Fire Services has found these measures have led to blocking off fire exits.

Businesses may use signage to direct customers to one exit, but cannot physically obstruct a designated exit or access to an exit.

“All exits must remain accessible in the event of an emergency,” said Carter Gramlich, Fire Prevention Officer.

Business owners are also reminded that locks on exit doors must comply with code requirements and must be easily operable without requiring keys or special knowledge.

The City of Medicine Hat would like to thank businesses for their patience and understanding during this time.
