Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day: Mayor Linnsie Clark

Mayor Linnsie Clark issued this statement Indigenous Peoples Day:

“Medicine Hat and area has been the traditional lands of the Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy) since time immemorial and is home to multiple historic sites related to our indigenous history. Some of our first settlers to this region were Metis, building their homes in Saratoga Park and the surrounding areas. Even our very name is owed to the people who inhabited this land long before the railway came through in 1883.

“The lessons learned by our early settlers from the Siksikaitsitapi were invaluable for survival in the early days of Medicine Hat. The rich history of the Blackfoot can be viewed across the city in locations such as Saratoga Park, Police Point Park, Strathcona Park, the Saamis Archeological Site in the Seven Persons Valley, and the Saamis Tepee.

“Please join me today on Indigenous Peoples Day in honouring all indigenous people across Canada including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit.”

Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated annually on the Summer Solstice, June 21, 2022.
