City accepting proposals for Carbon Capture project for the Power Generation Plan

Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat is now accepting proposals for Conceptual Design and Cost Estimation for the Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) project for the Power Generation Plant.

It is expected that federal carbon taxes will rise from $50 per tonne to $170 per tonne by the year 2030. The escalation in carbon taxes will substantially increase the cost of electricity generation from burning natural gas or other fossil fuels unless CCUS infrastructure is built to capture C02 and mitigate the impact of carbon taxes.

“Without bold action, escalating carbon taxes will have a negative impact on Southeast Alberta’s economy and standard of living,” says Brad Maynes, managing director, Energy & Infrastructure. “The City is actively investigating the possibility of constructing a carbon capture plant that uses proven technologies to capture C02 emissions.”

The City recognizes CCUS as being an integral part of the long-term solution for achieving global climate objectives and is committed to be an engaged partner in the transition to a sustainable and prosperous future for our community.

With this Request for Proposal, the City is seeking an Engineering Contractor to support them in conducting a Pre-FEED study focused in completing a licensor/vendor technology section process. As part of the services provided, the Engineering Contractor will evaluate reputable technology providers and proven commercial experience for carbon capture and assess the feasibility for the project.

For a full scope of services, proponents are encouraged to register with the City’s bidding system at https://medicinehat.bidsandtenders.ca. The deadline to submit a proposal is February 15, 2022.
