City addresses weed control concerns

Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat acknowledges that the condition of public spaces is a source of pride for residents and is committed to maintaining them to a standard that everyone can be proud of. However, due to some procedural delays in rolling out a new procurement plan and securing tenders for weed control, there are burgeoning weed issues in some areas of the city, including medians and sidewalks/curbs.

The City is diligently working to rectify the situation. Currently, Parks and Recreation has dedicated crews working on main collector routes like Dunmore Road and will be progressively moving to secondary and tertiary routes. In addition, the City is deploying additional crews from Municipal Works as well as contractors to apply herbicides, as weather permits.

Areas requiring attention have been identified and City crews aim to clear these areas, by the end of next week, August 4, 2023.

The Gershaw Drive and Trans Canada Interchange area has been undergoing a naturalization process due to its potential redesign in the future. A contractor will be on-site to start a clean-up process for ‘shoot’ and ‘sucker’ weeds that have popped up due to a lack of irrigation. This work is expected to be completed between August 4 – 11, 2023. It is important to note that it will take time for natural grasses to establish in this area and the City is committed to managing the appearance of this area in the interim.

The City thanks its residents for their patience and understanding during this time.
