City appoints new Economic Development Director

Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat announces the appointment of Selena McLean-Moore as Economic Development Director, effective July 3, 2023.

McLean-Moore has worked in various economic development roles for the past 18 years, most recently serving as the Southern Alberta Regional Economic Development Specialist with the Government of Alberta. In this capacity, McLean-Moore supported Alberta business by working with the Ministry of Jobs, Economy, and Trade to identify opportunities, attract investments, and implement strategies to stimulate economic activity.

“I am thrilled to welcome Selena to the role of Economic Development Director,” said City Manager Ann Mitchell. “The hiring of this position marks a significant milestone in the formulation of our city’s new economic development strategy. By filling this crucial role, we are now in a position to build a strong economic development department that will facilitate collaboration with regional partners and harness opportunities for the advancement of our industries and community.”

In this role, McLean-Moore will be tasked with building a team to reengage the community in three key areas: workforce development, business retention and expansion, and investment attraction.

“Our initial work will be to align with council’s vision and strategic priorities and reengage with business and industry, community partners, and municipalities in the region to create a strong economic development strategy,” said McLean-Moore. “We have many key assets in our region and opportunity for growth in sectors like defence and aerospace, petrochemical, and agri-food. I look forward to building a team to develop strategies to attract and retain business for economic prosperity.”  

McLean-Moore will officially begin in the new role on Monday, July 3.

“With the experience she brings, I am confident that Selena is the right person to lead us in a restart of our economic development strategy,” adds Mitchell.
