City Continues to Open Recreation Facilities as Pandemic Evolves
Medicine Hat – On Monday, Sept. 14, the City of Medicine Hat opened Kinplex 1, the third ice surface to return to operation since facilities closed due to COVID-19. The Cenovus Arena at the Big Marble Go Centre and the Canalta Centre are currently open.
Usage is currently limited to organized user groups including hockey, ringette, and figure skating, who have strict sport-specific guidance from their provincial governing bodies regarding COVID-19. Public skating has not yet resumed.
Modifications to limit the risk of spreading the virus are in place. A COVID monitor greets users at the door to assist them in using the facility safely. One-way traffic routes are established, along with altered designated entrances and exits for the ice surface.
“We are adhering to all guidance with regard to recreational facilities and sport that is available from the Government of Alberta,” said Natalie Sauer, Manager of Recreation with the Parks and Recreation Department. “Furthermore, we have issued our own procedures to our local user groups, who are also operating under guidelines from their provincial organizations. Hockey Alberta, for example, has eliminated tournaments until at least December of this year, and has altered league play for the time being. So, you can see our skaters have a triple-layer of protection in returning safely to sport.”
The City continues to open facilities as demand increases and guidance surrounding the pandemic allows. The Hockey Hounds Recreation Centre is expected to open on Sept. 28, with Kinplex 2 to follow on Oct. 13. The Moose Rec Centre will be the last arena to open when demand warrants.
Easing Restrictions and Additional Programming at the Big Marble Go Centre
At the Big Marble Go Centre Kinsmen Aquatic Park, the steam room has reopened with the hot tub and tot pool to follow by the end of the week, pending successful water test results. There will be protocols to ensure physical distancing. Additional swimming lessons have been added and the Sensory Swim is set to resume.
Shinny Hockey has resumed in the 55 and over, and 65 and over age categories, and patrons can now return to play pickleball in the gym.
All programs and classes, including public swimming and drop-in use of the gymnasium, require pre-registration at www.medicinehat.ca/Big Marble Go Centre.
“We know our facilities contribute to positive physical, emotional and mental health and we are doing everything we can to open up responsibly and ensure your safety,” adds Sauer.
