City to observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat will formally observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Tuesday, September 30.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities, while acknowledging the tragic history of these institutions. It was established in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, aiming to foster public awareness and reflection on the injustices faced by Indigenous Peoples. Recognizing this day is vital for promoting healing, accountability, and a shared commitment to reconciliation across the country.
"Truth and Reconciliation is a shared journey – one that calls for reflection, learning, and meaningful connection,” said Mayor Linnsie Clark. “The City of Medicine Hat stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities, renewing our commitment to listen, understand, and grow together. We encourage everyone to explore Indigenous history and culture, not just today, but as part of an ongoing commitment to reconciliation."
Where possible, flags at all City of Medicine Hat facilities will be lowered to half-mast from sunrise to sunset, and the Saamis Tepee will be lit orange to honour the day.
Residents are encouraged honour the day by attending an event co-hosted by Medicine Hat College, Miywasin Friendship Centre, and the Firekeepers Women’s Society. Their fourth-annual community event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at Medicine Hat College.
The public is also advised of several impacts to City of Medicine Hat facilities and services on September 30. Visit the Holiday Hours webpage for more information.
