City ratifies new collective agreements with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers

Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat has ratified a mediator’s recommendation resulting in the renewal of two collective agreements with Local Union 254 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

The previous agreements covering employees at the Power Plant, Water Treatment Plant, and Electric Distribution expired on December 31, 2019. Both new agreements are effective for a term of four years from January 1, 2020 until December 31, 2023.

The mediator’s recommendation includes general wage adjustments in each year of the agreement, including potential adjustments for 2021 and 2022 based on changes to the Alberta Consumer Price Index, of 1.1% effective January 1, 2020; 1% effective January 1, 2021; 2% effective January 1, 2022; and 2% effective January 1, 2023.

"This was a long, complicated round of bargaining," said Robert Nicolay, City Manager. "We were able to work with IBEW to find an outcome that is mutually acceptable considering the general economic conditions in Alberta, providing certainty for the City, the Union and our employees during very uncertain times."
