City recognizes National Day of Mourning
Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat will observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 28, 2023 to mark the National Day of Mourning for workers whose lives were lost in the workplace and to acknowledge those who were disabled, injured, or afflicted with industrial disease.
The City’s Corporate Safety Lead, Jason Wheeler, is also the Vice-Chair of the Medicine Hat Regional Safety Committee of the Alberta Construction Safety Association and will be the master of ceremonies at the public memorial service at the Medicine Hat Memorial Arboretum on Friday, April 28 at 11 a.m. Mayor Linnsie Clark, Chief Allan Murphy and Interim Fire Chief Chad Eakins will all provide remarks at the ceremony.
“On National Day of Mourning, it is important to take a pause to think of workers who have been seriously injured or lost their lives while doing work. Reflect on the effect it has on families and coworkers and aim to reset towards a zero-injury workplace," said Wheeler.
In 2022, in the Province of Alberta, 161 lives were lost too soon; 101 from occupational disease, 30 from trauma, 27 from motor vehicle incidents, and three from cardiac events.
Where possible, flags will fly at half-mast at City facilities. Those who are able are encouraged to mark the day with a moment of silence at 11 a.m.
